ACC announces football schedule model for 2023-26

GREENSBORO, NC (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday announced a new football planning model that will take effect from the 2023 season. The new model is based on a 3-5-5 structure where each team will play against three primary opponents annually and meet the other 10 league teams twice during the four-year cycle, once at home and once on the road. The schedule allows each team to meet all 13 conference opponents at home and away at least once during the four-year cycle. The structure was adopted by the league’s athletic directors and the faculty’s athletic representatives earlier today.

The new timetable will eliminate the Atlantic and Coastal divisions with all 14 schools competing in one division from 2023. The two best teams based on the winning percentage for the conference will compete in the Subway ACC Football Championship Game on the first Saturday in December at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte , North Carolina. In May, the NCAA Division I Council approved the deregulation of the current rule that had limited the autonomy of an individual conference to determine the participants in the football championship.

“The future ACC football planning model provides significant improvements for our schools and conferences, where the most important thing is that our student athletes have the opportunity to play each school both at home and away over a four-year period,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. . “We appreciate the thoughtful discussions in our membership, including the head football coaches and athletic leaders. Finally, it was clear that this model is in the best interest of our student athletes, programs and fans at this time.”

A special one-hour edition of The Huddle will air on the ACC Network on Tuesday at 7pm to discuss the new planning format. The show will be hosted by Drew Carter and feature analysis by Eric Mac Lain, EJ Manuel and Mark Richt.
