Last updated:

Tieflings, beings descended from hell or abyssal bloodlines, whether they were turned into tieflings by the powers of an arch-demon, arch-devil or victim of a divine curse, or perhaps they have a hellish heritage that has left a clear mark on their appearance. Tieflings are a demonic-looking humanoid, with large horns having a variety of shapes: some have curly horns like a weather, others have straight and high horns like a gazelle, and some spiral upward like an antelope’s horn. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which buzz or wrap around their legs when upset or nervous. Their teeth are pointed, and their eyes are solid colors – black, red, white, silver or gold – with no visible sclera or pupil. Their skin tones cover the whole spectrum of human color, but also include different shades of red. Their hair, which falls down behind their horns, is usually dark, from black or brown to dark red, blue or purple.

Tieflings are among a favorite race for many D&D players, not only because of their aesthetics, but also because of the abilities and features of the game they abound.

Tieflings in Baldur’s Gate 3

Tieflings is a narratively dense race, considering that the story of BG3 takes place shortly after the events of Descent to Avernus, a TTRPG module centered around Elturel, a city run mainly by tieflings. In fact, shortly after starting BG3, the player may encounter a number of refugees, the Tieflings who survived the descent and are currently on their way to Baldur’s Gate for sanctuary.

Welcome to Baldur’s Gate, a city of ambition and corruption located at the crossroads of the sword coast. You’ve just started your adventure career, but you’re already involved in a plot that stretches from the shadows of Baldur’s Gate to the front lines of the air-covered blood war! Do you have what it takes to turn infernal war machines and cruel contracts against the arch-devil Zariel and her devilish hordes? And can you ever hope to find your way home safely when you face the endless evils of the nine hells?

Baldur’s Gate: Descent to Avernus

So if you choose to play a tiefling, you will be happy to see a welcoming group of your relatives, but very early we will also see the discrimination tieflings endure in Forgotten Realms. And we can only imagine how worse it will be when they get to Baldur’s Gate itself. That said, tieflings often have a lot of narratively driven content, thanks to their infernal bloodline. The world will recognize you, and it may even be harder for you, but this only means that it will be a more immersive story for you.
