LIV Golf Tour changes the landscape of the sport
Day two of the first Saudi-backed LIV Golf event begins today in the midst of the ongoing war of words between the PGA Tour and the controversial breakaway series. After months of speculation, the opening tournament started yesterday at the Centurion Club in St Albans, but was met by confirmation from the PGA Tour that rebel players participating in the event have been suspended with immediate effect.
The fantastic news further anchored both sides in the battle that threatens to change the sport as we know it, and was welcomed by players such as Rory McIlroy, who has been involved in the PGA. It came when Ian Poulter, one of the 17 golfers who was sanctioned by the PGA Tour, stated that he intended to appeal the suspension. “It makes no sense,” Poulter said. “I did not resign my membership because I do not feel I have done anything wrong. I’ve been playing all over the world for 25 years. This is no different … it’s a power struggle and it’s just disappointing. “
Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia are among other big names competing in the first event. On the field, the scoring was led by former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel after an opening round of 65. Follow all the action from the first event of the controversial tour, below:
LIV Golf: What is the prize fund?
Each regular season event will have a $ 25 million prize pool – each player on the field receives a cut, with a guaranteed $ 4m for first place and $ 120,000 for last place. Of the $ 25 million, $ 5 million will be split between the top three teams.
The top three players in the overall individual championship will receive a split of $ 30 million, with the overall champion taking $ 18 million, the second place receiving $ 8 million and the third place receiving $ 4 million.
The season-ending team championship has a $ 50 million prize fund, with the winning team sharing $ 16m and the team finishing last receiving $ 1m. Each player gets a 25 percent cut.
In comparison, the winner of the PGA Championship, one of golf’s four majors, receives $ 3 million from a total prize pool of $ 15 million.

What is LIV Golf?
Reports of a new breakaway league first appeared in 2019, but gained momentum last year when the two-time Open champion Greg Norman became the face of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series as CEO.
With Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund financing the series, there is a clear link to the Saudi government, whose record of human rights has been criticized by groups such as Amnesty International.
But what was for a long time considered a bargaining chip against the traditional PGA and DP World Tours and nothing more took the form of the LIV Golf Series, which also has new competition rules and what the tournament organizers say is an “exciting” new format.
What are the rules?
LIV Golf Series events will be played over three days and 54 holes, instead of the traditional four-day events with 72 holes. There will also be no cuts, so the 48 players who start the week will play all three rounds.
There will also be individual and team competitions within the same event. The individual competition is won by the player who shoots the lowest score over 54 holes, as normal.
However, the team competition will consist of 12 teams with four players, with team captains choosing the teams using a “snake draft” ahead of the opening event at Centurion Club. The teams will also have their own unique names and logos.
When it comes to scoring, the two best individual scores will count against the team’s total over the first two rounds, with the three best scores in the third and final round. The team with the lowest total score at the end of the third round becomes the winner.
