MIT researchers believe they have discovered how to fully reverse climate change

Researchers at MIT believe they may have finally found a way to reverse climate change. Or at least help ease it a bit.

The idea revolves heavily around the creation and placement of several thin film-like silicon bubbles. The “space bubbles” as they refer to them would be put together like a raft. When expanded into space, it will be about the size of Brazil. The bubbles would then provide an extra buffer against the harmful solar radiation coming from the sun.

The aim of these new “space bubbles” would be to alleviate or even reverse climate change. The earth has seen rising temperatures over the last few centuries. In fact, NASA has previously released a gif that describes how global temperatures have changed over the years. Now we see massive “mouths to hell” opening up in the permafrost.

It is also the fact that scientists have just discovered another hole in the earth’s ozone layer. As such, it is still a high priority for many to find ways to facilitate or reverse climate change. This new plan is based on a concept first proposed by astronomer Roger Angel. Angel originally suggested using a “cloud” of small spacecraft to shield the earth from the sun’s radiation.

However, researchers at MIT have taken the same basic concept and improved it by replacing inflatable silicon bubbles for the spacecraft that Angel originally proposed. Being able to reverse climate change will be a big step in the right direction. However, shielding the earth from the sun’s radiation would only be a part of it. We still have to cut back on other things as well.

But exactly how does a “fleet” of space bubbles protect the earth from the sun’s radiation? Well, the basic idea is to send the bubbles to L1 Lagrangian Point. This is the place directly between the earth and the sun where the gravity of both the star and our planet is lifted. As such, the space bubbles would theoretically only be able to float without much draft from any of the bodies.

Scientists say we probably still need to put some kind of spacecraft out there to keep things on track. But it can give us a good chance to reverse climate change, or at least slow down change. It is important to note that MIT does not see this as an alternative solution to our current adapt and reduce efforts. Instead, it is a backup solution that is meant to help if things get out of control.
