Update [Tue 28th Jun, 2022 17:30 BST]: More details have been shared by Sega after Direct on Sonic Frontiers (thanks, Nintendo Everything!). This includes new abilities, specific enemy types and a whole new character called Sage.

We have also received more confirmation that Tails and Amy will be involved in some way!

Here is all the new information from Sega:

Sonic’s new journey begins when he and his friends – Amy and Tails – head to the Starfall Islands in search of the Chaos Emeralds. As they approach the islands, sudden problems hit their plane, and they are sucked into a dimensional portal. Sonic then finds himself separated from his friends and wakes up in a strange, digital world – Cyber Space. He miraculously escapes Cyber Space and arrives at Kronos Island, one of the Starfall Islands, full of ancient ruins where strange enemies roam. It’s then up to Sonic to explore the Starfall Islands, find his lost friends and uncover the mysteries surrounding him.

Star Falls
The first island Sonic explores is Kronos Island. The terrain and climate often see rain, large waterfalls, lush forests, mountains and floating towers in the air. The ruins scattered around the island appear to be the homes of ancient inhabitants – Koco.

Cyber Space
Entrances to Cyber Space created by the ancient civilization Starfall Islands can be found everywhere on the map. Sonic fans will solve puzzles and complete challenges to earn Portal Gears to unlock these entrances and access Cyber Space levels with the traditional, fast-paced action platform. They must complete the challenges at each Cyber Space level to receive the Vault Keys to advance in the game.

Platforming with open zone
Players can enjoy high-speed, open-zone gaming and interact with various activities on the island wherever and whenever they wish. Experience exciting battles, puzzles, side quests, Cyber Space and conversations with characters across the island in any order you want to match your playing style.

The game world
Sonic Frontiers expands what fans know and love about traditional Sonic games, and combines both linear level and platform play in the open zone into a new, action-packed Sonic adventure. The world map is bigger than ever before, giving Sonic more room to run and explore his surroundings, so he can develop the land around him as he delves deeper into the mysteries of the Starfall Islands.

Combat system
Sonic’s fighting style is more exciting and fluid than ever before. Players can use various button controls to fight strategically, and combine moves such as dodges, parries, counters and more in various combinations to showcase combat skills that are unlocked throughout the game. If you prefer simpler play, the game also has an auto mode where various attack combinations can be performed with a single button. All Sonic fans can easily enjoy the fast and fluid combat system.

New Cyloop capability
Sonic learns a new ability called “Cyloop”, and creates a light band that mirrors Sonic’s tracks. Surround enemies, objects and areas to uncover the various effects and unlock the secrets of the Starfall Islands.

There are various puzzles to solve through the ancient ruins of the Starfall Islands. Completing each puzzle can provide items to increase Sonic’s power and defense, uncover hidden parts of the map, and unlock new ways to navigate the island at high speeds.

Playing styles
When you first start the game, you can choose between two player control styles – Action Style and High Speed Style. Action Style helps with more accurate platform games, great for players new to Sonic games. High Speed Style offers more speed, great for players accustomed to Sonic titles.

Sonic the Hedgehog
The world’s fastest supersonic hedgehog. Sonic’s adventure begins on the Starfall Islands in search of Chaos Emeralds and his lost friends. He is also guided by a strange voice along the way.

A mysterious girl who appears over the Starfall Islands. Throughout the story, she warns Sonic to leave the Starfall Islands despite his mission to find and rescue his friends.

Star Falls is home to strange creatures Sonic has never met before. Players must use the all-new combat system and abilities to take down these strange new enemies.

SOLDIERS: This enemy spawns in groups and attacks in offensive movements with both hands.
CYCLON: A floating enemy that causes damage with attacks that appear as electric tornadoes.

BANGER: A wheel-like enemy who hurries towards Sonic when he is spotted and attacks at high speed if provoked.

SHELL: An enemy protected by a hard shell that attacks from a distance with a boomerang-type move. Sonic’s attacks can not penetrate the hard shell, but other methods such as Cyloop can catch this enemy astray.
UBBLE: An enemy formed by a group of bullets that attack Sonic with electricity.

NINJA: An enemy with high-speed attacks reminiscent of the fighting style of the namesake. Can block incoming attacks and strike with shadows by itself.
THE TOWER: An enemy consisting of various stacked parts. Its weakness is at the top of its head, so Sonic must figure out how to destroy each stack to get to it.
ASURA: A great enemy that looks like a tall building. Run up the arm it throws down to find its weakness at the top and attack.

Today’s trailer gave us a first look at the game running on Switch, and it looks surprisingly smooth! Although the new trailer did not show much new, we got a glimpse of some of the weather effects, more combat and more of Sonic who just ran around some big, open fields, collected rings and climbed the towers.

There was also a hint of Eggman’s presence, with what looks like a mechanical building with the eerie doctor’s logo plastered on the side.

The biggest revelation is a new area called “Cyber Space” that will hide challenges you can complete. Some of the levels in this area look like they are based on levels from Sonic’s history, with a Green Hill based area and something that looks like Metal Harbor from Sonic Adventure 2. Here you will unlock keys that will help you get you further yourself further – whether it is in the main story, or just to unlock more challenges, we have to wait and see.
